This sector, with 28 beds and operative 7 days a week, represents a model of traditional assistance. It hosts all the patients hospitalised for arthroprosthetic surgery (hip, knee and shoulder replacement).
Joint prosthetic surgery has always been one of the main types of surgeries performed in the Lugo Hospital district; now, there are 5 rooms for hospitalisation with 2 beds each, especially reserved for patients with the same problems and expecting a similar surgical treatment and rehabilitation protocols.
In the year 2001, over 250 cases of arthroprosthetic surgery were performed in our hospital district. According to the latest data from the Register for Orthopaedic Prosthetic Implants (R.I.P.O.), the hospital in Lugo ranks 5th in the region for the number of prosthetic surgeries of the hip.
Traumatology, a branch which is constantly expanding as a consequence of the increased number of traumatic events and of the increased life expectancy, is obviously well integrated in this "traditional" hospitalisation section.
